Catch Me If You Can (2002)

This was the second time I've seen this movie, and it's a pretty amazing story. I'd like to read the book someday, which is by Frank Abagnale, the guy who actually did successfully pretend, at a young age, to be a PanAm pilot, a pediatrician, and a lawyer, cashing millions of dollars worth of fraudulent checks. It's a fascinating story.

Sense and Sensibility is my favorite novel by Jane Austen, so I was excited to go to an outdoor theater production of it at Burnby Hall Gardens just down the road from us. I told the kids that I'd take anyone who read the book first. Nobody was very interested except for Lillian, who immediately started it. She was about a quarter of the way through it when we saw the play and she's busy finishing it now. It'll be her first time reading a Jane Austen novel. (Insert gleeful clapping here!) Left to right: servant girl (also played Fanny Dashwood and Mrs. Palmer); Margaret (Lucy Steele); Willoughby (Mr. Palmer); Marianne; Eleanor; Mrs. Dashwood (Mrs. Jennings). In this production, all of the actors played multiple parts except those who played Eleanor and Marianne. I love seeing actors take on multiple roles in a production. Cicely, Alaska (Roslyn, Washington)

We missed out on the TV series Northern Exposure when it first aired, but Erin got into reruns of it in the late 1990s, and we’ve watched most of it on DVD since. Phin has lately started watching it from the beginning too, during his rare allotted blocks of TV time. During our recent drive up to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada , we took the opportunity to make a little side trip to Roslyn, Washington, which was the actual location of the fictional Cicely, Alaska portrayed in Northern Exposure. It’s a very small town, and we were there late enough in the day that most businesses were closed, but it was fun to see it in person at last.

Pocklington, England

Last week on Wednesday, we moved for the fifth time since we began our adventure. We've purchased a few new suitcases and gotten rid of some small bags, so our packing is looking better every time. I'm letting go of the packing-for-carry-on-only mentality that I used to adhere to for trips. It turns out that if you're packing for a year, it's better to have one big suitcase (one that rolls well) and one backpack for each person. Duh. But it took me a while to figure that out. There will probably be more revisions in the future. Everybody's squinting in the photo below because it was so bright and sunny that day! Every sunny day in England feels like a miracle. We took the train from Liverpool to York. Just outside the York railway station, where we waited for our bus to Pocklington, we were just across the street from the York city walls .
