I watched this expecting to roll my eyes a lot, but it was actually pretty fun. Not necessarily good, but fun.

We missed out on the TV series Northern Exposure when it first aired, but Erin got into reruns of it in the late 1990s, and we’ve watched most of it on DVD since. Phin has lately started watching it from the beginning too, during his rare allotted blocks of TV time. During our recent drive up to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada , we took the opportunity to make a little side trip to Roslyn, Washington, which was the actual location of the fictional Cicely, Alaska portrayed in Northern Exposure. It’s a very small town, and we were there late enough in the day that most businesses were closed, but it was fun to see it in person at last.

Table Mountain hike

Yesterday I hiked Table Mountain, in front of the Grand Teton, with Scoutmaster George Bates, our sons Jacob, Phin, and other boys from their Boy Scout troop. Here we are at the top: Here Jacob took a picture of me while I was getting a little rest but trying not to fall off: Today was Battle of the Tetons back at Treasure Mountain Scout Camp, where boys tried to sink each other's canoes: Our troop didn't win, but made it to the finals.

Halfway point

We've been gone for about 6 1/2 months, so we're in the second half of The Great Home School Field Trip Adventure! Here's a quick run-down of where we've been: two months in Prague, Czech Republic; one month in Dresden, Germany; a few days in Berlin, Germany; a month in Liverpool, England; two months in Pocklington (near York), England; a week in London; and now we are back in Prague until the beginning of November. If you count the moves to and from Berlin and London, we've moved seven times since we left from the Salt Lake Airport. I think we're getting better at it, but it's still the worst part of the trip. I guess it's more like nine times if you count our slow departure from Teton Valley to Idaho Falls to Layton before we flew from Salt Lake! This time around in Prague, we are living in New Town (founded 1348), which is very different from the quiet neighborhood in Břevnov we lived in last time.
